Listen to sales or support calls from an Indian team and you will often hear it early on: a customer starts in Hindi, switches to English for the product name, and finishes the sentence in Hindi again. An agent that only handles one language at a time sounds stiff, and callers notice.
This guide covers how to plan for that from the start, so your agent sounds like someone who works on your team.
Code-switching is normal, so plan for it
Mixing languages is not a mistake to correct. It is how many people talk about money, appointments and orders. Decide up front which language the agent opens in, and let it follow the caller after that. If the caller replies in English, the agent should answer in English; if they move back to Hindi, so should the agent.
Write this into the agent's instructions plainly: open in the language your customers usually use, then mirror the caller.
Script the intent, not the exact words
Long word-for-word scripts break the moment a caller says something unexpected. Instead, give the agent the goal of each step and the facts it needs:
- What the call is for, in one line
- The details it must confirm, such as a name, date or amount
- What counts as done, and what to do if the caller wants a person
The agent can then phrase each step naturally in whichever language the caller is using.
Names, numbers and amounts
The details that matter most are the easiest to get wrong. Say amounts the way people say them, so a figure in lakh sounds like lakh, not like a string of digits. Confirm dates by repeating them back. Spell out how to pronounce brand and product names in the instructions, and check them in a test call.
Test with real voices before you launch
Before an agent calls customers, run it against the kinds of callers it will meet: someone who speaks quickly, someone who switches language mid-sentence, someone who interrupts. Listen to the recordings, fix the instructions, and test again. Kallix agents always say they are AI assistants, so callers know who they are talking to from the first line.
