How conversational AI works on a phone call
On a call, conversational AI runs in a loop. The caller speaks, speech recognition turns it into text, the language model chooses the reply and any action, and text-to-speech says it. Then the system listens again.
Take an inbound call to a clinic, Asha Clinic:
- Agent: "Namaste, main Asha Clinic ki AI assistant hoon. Bataiye, kaise madad karoon?"
- Caller: "Doctor sahab Saturday ko milenge? Subah ka time chahiye."
- Agent: "Ji, Saturday subah ke liye 10 baje aur 11:30 baje mein se kaunsa theek rahega?"
- Caller: "11:30."
In four short turns the system understood a question about availability, a preference for the morning and a choice.
Conversational AI, chatbots and IVR
A chatbot is conversational AI in text. An IVR isn't conversational at all: it plays a menu and waits for a key. Voice is the harder case, because people interrupt, pause, mix Hindi and English and expect an answer straight away.
Why it matters
Most customers would rather say what they need than sit through a list of options. Conversational AI lets a business respond in the customer's own words, at any hour, and keep a record of what was agreed.
How Kallix uses it
Kallix applies conversational AI to phone calls: AI voice agents that you build, test, launch, measure and improve on one platform, with WhatsApp follow-ups, CRM sync and analytics built in.
